BOURNE – The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office has received a grant from Cape Cod Healthcare’s Community Benefits Fund to expand mental health services for inmates.

The $30,000 will be used in the Sheriff James Cumming’s Coordinated Mental Health Interventions program which will expand care for inmates with severe mental illness, provide training for correctional officers and enhance reentry planning to ensure a stable transition back into the community.

“Over the last few years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of incarcerated individuals who are suffering from a mental illness,” said Cummings.

“In response to the growing challenges presented to our correctional facility, I am very appreciative of our partners from Cape Cod Healthcare for their support. These funds will allow us to provide individualized treatment and planning. Our shared goal is to continue to reduce crime and help those who are struggling with a mental illness,” he said.
