Barnstable County to Look into Costs of Open Meeting Law Complaints

BARNSTABLE – Members of the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates are seeking financial accounting reports detailing costs incurred from open meeting law complaints.

Dennis delegate John Ohman, speaking before the County Commissioners, recently requested the public records detailing how much complaints from Commissioner Ron Beaty are costing the county.

“I know how hard we [work] to balance the budget and these are significant matters,” said Ohman. “When you produce a frivolous complaint to the Attorney General’s office it costs us time, money and, by the way, good will with the public.”

Among the complaints filed by Beaty to the Attorney General is one against his own board.

Ohman said the complaints are detrimental to operation of county government.

“It’s not good government,” he said.

Ohman is seeking financial reports from the Cape Cod Commission, County Commissioners and the Assembly of Delegates.

The commissioners agreed to the request.
