BARNSTABLE – Following a two-hour meeting last week, the Barnstable Town Council again managed to avoid making a decision on recreational marijuana.
The board appeared set to vote on a proposal which would have allowed for the cultivation and testing of recreational pot in certain designated areas of town but alas it was not to be.
Councilor James Tinsley of Hyannis declared a “charter objection,” a seldom-used procedural move which immediately stalls a vote until the council’s next meeting.
Tinsley has been a vocal supporter of allowing recreational marijuana shops into Barnstable, and seemed to indicate that he didn’t think that the motion on the table went far enough.
“I have a problem with the prohibiting of all other non-medical,” he told his colleagues, “I know we’ve discussed it only takes two readings, and we can revisit, and we can all of this. That’s wonderful, but it doesn’t happen very often.”
Barnstable has until the end of the year to finalize a position on the matter before the town’s temporary moratorium on recreational marijuana expires.
In order for any zoning amendment to pass, the council needs a super-majority of nine councilors to support it. The town council will take up the issue again at their meeting on September 6th.
