Barnstable Harbor Bulkhead Getting Repairs

The Cape's harbors are busy this time of year. Pictured is Chatham Harbor.

BARNSTABLE – A construction project to make repairs to the steel bulkhead at Barnstable Harbor will take place over the winter months.

The discovery of missing bolts led to an investigation which found the wrong size washers were used causing the bolts to become loose.

The wrong size washers were installed the last time the wall was repaired due to a partial collapse about 5 years ago.

Barnstable DPW Director Dan Santos said the contractor has admitted to the mistake and has taken responsibility.

“We had a responsible party step up and say ‘we are going to take care of this’,” said Santos. “Often times in the construction business people start pointing fingers.”

Santos said the work entails excavating all the soil behind the wall on the east and south sides.

Then new beams will be installed, which are bolted to the bulkhead.

The project is expected to be completed by next May at no cost to taxpayers.
