HYANNIS – Seven former students and four former staff members of Barnstable High School were honored during the school’s memorial garden dedication ceremony on Wednesday.
The event included a poetry reading, musical performances by the school’s chamber choir and alumni and a procession led by the Barnstable Police Department Color Guard.
“The community and the families that are here, this is really for all of the community, and I think of what they are thinking and feeling at the moment,” said Barnstable High School English Teacher Gerry Wollak.
The memorial garden was dedicated at the school in 2009 and a dedication has been held every year to remember former students and staff that have passed away.
Wollak said there is one moment that stands out for him in the dedication ceremony.
“The most touching for me is when we hear the names of the people and the placement of the flowers and remembrance of each of them,” said Wollak.
The former students honored were: Justin Matthew Aristide, Michael K. Aselton, Stephan J. Calvin, Stephen R. Guerrini, Thomas K. MacPhee, Richard Emil Olson, and Patrick Yezukevicz.
The former staff members honored were: Sheila Burns, Grace O’Connor, Jack Sartell and Sheldon Thayer.
