Barnstable High School to Include Students in ALICE Training for First Time

HYANNIS –Barnstable High School will participate in the school’s first ever ALICE drill that includes students this month.

The drill comes after months of preparation by school staff to include the students.

“The ALICE training is an options-based security program and we’ve been involved in three stages of training with the faculty thus far. In January we’re going to do step four with the faculty and step one with the students,” explained Barnstable High School Principal Patrick Clark.

“The idea being that school resource officers from the Barnstable Police Department design some scenarios by which the students and staff will respond together in a practice format.”

ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. The method has been known as the new standard on how to respond to an active shooter or intruder in schools or other public venues.

Principal Patrick Clark says he collaborated with school resource officers to create a drill suitable for the students’ development.

“We want to make sure people are fully prepared in the event of a school intruder and the various types of emergencies addressed in our Emergency Preparedness Manual and make sure that we can make good decisions to keep the largest amount of people safe,” said Clark.

“It’s also good training for students as they head off to the college and career world to understand that they need to be attentive to their environment and know how to act in the event of an emergency.”

The drill is scheduled to take place at the school on Monday, January 14.
