BARNSTABLE – The Executive Director of the Barnstable Housing Authority gave a presentation to the Town of Barnstable last night about how busy the organization is.

The BHA operates and provides low income housing subsidies and subsidizes housing.

The organization has administered over 1,000 units of housing and own over 355 units, but are currently administering over 25 separate wait lists for housing.

BHA Executive Director Lorri Finton said residents range in age from infants to those who are almost 95 years old.

“Our residents are town employees, teachers, health care workers, restaurant and hotel staff members, painters, wood workers, authors, retail employees and librarians,” said Finton.

According to Finton, the BHA has rehabilitated four historic homes along the Hyannis Waterfront District and has an annual budget of $7 million.

In her presentation to Barnstable Town Council, Finton explained that her organization has worked with the former occupants of the Craigville Motel and the victims of the fire at Cromwell Court and Dennis Condominiums to find housing.

Still, Finton said they’re looking forward to partnering with the town and the growth management department to develop more affordable housing units for a community that desperately needs it.

“We’re held to high standards and we’re examined under a microscope,” said Finton. “We’re busier than we’ve ever been and we’re bursting at the seams.”
