CENTERVILLE – The last remaining undeveloped property on the West Side of Mill Pond in Centerville has been protected.
The Barnstable Land Trust will hold a conservation restriction on the six-acre parcel along Bumps River Road that protects it from development in perpetuity.
The land was purchased with Community Preservation Act funds.
The parcel contains priority habitat for rare species and a critical natural landscape that will be important for coastal adaptation and flood control.
The conservation of the land means that the scenic view of Mill Pond from Bumps River Road will be forever preserved.
Over the past 30 years, both the land trust and the Town of Barnstable have made a significant investment in land in the area to protect water quality and wildlife along the Bumps River wetland corridor, including Scudder Bay.
The newly-conserved parcel connects to 27 acres of town-owned conservation land to the north. The land trust also owns the land on the south side of Bumps River Road.
The purchase was made possible through the Massachusetts Conservation Land Tax Credit program, which provided $75,000 toward the purchase price.
The Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts provided technical support.
