HYANNIS – The 23rd session of Inside Barnstable Town Government: Citizens Leadership Academy starts next month.

The goal is to educate citizens about town government operations and to receive feedback.

The program is also designed to grow participation in civic affairs and increase the awareness of the challenges facing municipal government.

“We came up with an 11-week course that basically shows you every municipal department,” said Susan French, the co-facilitator of the program. “What’s going on. Putting a face to a name. What their budget is. What their staffing is and their challenges and their accomplishments.”

The classes start February 2 and are Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 9 at various locations around town. There will also be a bus tour through the seven villages.

Town staff conduct the classes and provide interactive learning experiences, group discussions and site tours.

There are still spots available and class size is limited. The program is free and open to anyone who lives or works in Barnstable.

The program started 13 years ago and over 600 individuals have participated, according to French.

The program mirrors popular police academies that are offered around the Cape.

“We are still the only one on Cape Cod,” said French. “We’ve been asked [by other towns] and we’ve talked to people about how to develop one.”

Applications can be found in the town manager’s office and online.
