HYANNIS – Proposed improvements to the Sea Street and Ocean Avenue area of Hyannis are another step closer to becoming reality.
The Town of Barnstable’s Department of Public Works hosted a public hearing last week regarding the plan which has been in the works for years.
The state-funded project would extend from Main Street to the entrance of Keyes Memorial Beach on Ocean Avenue, aiming to improve pedestrian and bicycle access and overall traffic safety, along with the updating of aging infrastructure and enhancing the streetscape.
Barnstable’s Town Engineer Paul Graves explained that they will try to limit the project’s effect on traffic, “We anticipate that the construction will probably be phased, it’s going to go over several seasons, so in each active phase through traffic to that area will be maintained.”
The project would include installing ADA-compliant sidewalks on both sides of the road, new or resurfaced pavement, increased lane widths for the use of bicycles, improved drainage and lighting, and other streetscape elements, including plantings and benches.
“We’ll make some sidewalk improvements,” explained Graves, “for most of that length there is only one side and for much of that way it’s pretty narrow so we’re going to provide more generous sidewalks. That will narrow the roadway a bit which will actually help with traffic culling, slowing the traffic down overall.”
Construction is planned to begin in the spring and continue through 2019 with breaks between Memorial Day and Labor Day and over the winter.
