HYANNIS – The town of Barnstable is giving its top law enforcement officer a new contract.
Barnstable Police Chief Paul B. MacDonald will continue serving in the Cape’s largest town.
“Chief MacDonald has agreed to a three-year contract extension, which will take place beginning on October 1,” Barnstable Town Manager Thomas Lynch said.
The chief’s new salary will be $160,773 up from $157,620, Lynch said. The contract also stipulates for a two percent annual cost of living increase.
Lynch said the chief has been responsible with overseeing numerous initiatives.
“The chief has really done an excellent job for us, instituted community policing, done a lot of work on the opiate and homeless issues, of course, and created two new substations, in Hyannis and in Marstons Mills,” Lynch said. “We’re very pleased we’re going to have stable leadership for another three years.”
The chief joined the department in 1981. He began leading the department in 2006 when he was appointed acting chief.
The chief recently made two appointments to restructure the upper echelons of the department.
Sean E. Balcom and Matthew K. Sonnabend were both named as deputy chiefs.
Chief MacDonald’s new contract is scheduled to be ratified by the Barnstable Town Council Thursday night at its meeting.
