Barnstable Police Searching For Knife-Wielding Man

PoliceHYANNIS- Barnstable Police are searching for a man they say broke into a hotel room at the Americas Best Value Inn and Suites in Hyannis and attacked a couple from Pennsylvania on vacation.

Sgt. Sean Sweeney says the couple were walking to their room around 8:30 p.m. last night when they saw a man lingering around their room.

The man then forced the elderly couple into their room and slammed the door.

The man wielded a pocket-knife and attempted to grab the 78-year-old male victim, but the victim kicked him, causing both men to wrestle on the floor between both beds.

That’s when the 77-year-old woman reached into her purse and attempted to give the man cash, but the man grabbed the woman’s tan purse instead and fled the room on foot.

Police say the man ran to the Steamship Authority parking lot, climbed onto a car and jumped over a fence into the railroad yard.

A K-9 unit was dispatched to search for the suspect, but were unable to locate him.

Sweeney says a purse that matches the description of the one the woman had stolen was recovered near the railroad yard.

It’s unknown what the suspect had taken from the purse.

Police are looking for a 35 year old man, light-skinned black male or dark-tanned white male, 5’10” tall with short dark hair.

He was wearing jeans and a light colored tank top at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Barnstable Police.
