Barnstable Preparing to Restart Recreational Activities

BARNSTABLE – The Barnstable Recreation Department is preparing to restart activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even though guidelines have been released by Governor Charlie Baker and the second reopening phase across the state has begun, Recreation Director Patti Machado explained that it is not just a “free-for-all” now.

“They’ll be operational guidelines set in place,” Machado said, “and then we will hopefully be able to move forward and be able to keep our facilities open, and keep everybody safe enjoying activity in some way.”

Operational plans still have to be approved by the town’s Board of Health and Town Manager Mark Ells.

Machado explained that, similar to beach guidelines, users will have to commit to practicing guidelines in order to keep recreational outlets open. She is confident, though, that residents will cooperate.

“I really feel strongly that people here will do what they need to do to help make sure that we can all have a safe summer and able to keep our facilities open,” she said.

“I’m really hopeful.”

Machado is hoping to see things such as the town’s skate park and disc golf course open soon. Tennis courts are open.

The All Day Summer Fun Club is set to begin in July, with health guidelines in place.

While Machado mentioned that it will offer a different experience than in past years, the program still will provide children in the town with plenty of activities.

Kids will have to stay with the groups that they’re assigned to each day and will have to wear masks or face coverings at all times. Also, equipment cannot be shared between children.
