HYANNIS – The Town of Barnstable held a public meeting on Thursday night at Barnstable Town Hall to discuss the new dog park.
The town received funding from the Stanton Foundation for the dog park, which will be located on Phinney’s Lane near Hathaway’s Pond.
The project is currently in the design phase and if there are no setbacks, construction could start this fall with a ribbon-cutting set for next spring.
The Stanton Foundation will fund up to $250,000 of the project’s costs.
The Stanton Foundation encourages positive dog/human relationships and provides grants to support the creation of enclosed dog parks in cities and towns in the state.
“It gives people a place to go with their dogs to be off-leash, I think that’s the biggest thing, because you don’t really have these areas where you can be off-leash,” said Michael Dodson, Landscape Architectural Services Consultant with CDM Smith, Inc.
The meeting included an update on the current status of the park and a presentation about the project.
Residents also had a chance to ask questions about the design and structure of the park.
Dodson said that there is no particular feature that residents like best about having in the park.
“The opportunity to be with other dogs is really the biggest thing, because if you design a fenced-in area for dogs to be, it’s going to draw people to that space,” said Dodson.
