BARNSTABLE – The town of Barnstable is set to review its lifeguard policy in February, after two recent drownings at a Yarmouth hotel.
By law, most hotels in Barnstable are required to have lifeguards on duty, but some smaller hotels are not required to have lifeguards on duty at their pools.
That policy was implemented five years ago, and there have been no incidents, according to Dr. Wayne Miller, chairman of the Barnstable Board of Health.
“I think we need to evaluate what happened in Yarmouth, how it happened, and whether having lifeguards would be protective of that or not,” said Miller.
“It’s not a simple question to answer in terms of what is the proper thing to do,” Miller said.
Hotels with less than 50 units are currently not required to have lifeguards on duty in the Town of Barnstable.
