BARNSTABLE – The Barnstable school committee recently approved the public school budget for the next fiscal year.
The committee voted earlier this month for the $70 million budget after receiving a quick summary from Town Finance Director Gareth Markwell.
The proposed budget includes a 3.3 percent increase in salaries, a 6.1 percent increase in supplies and 2.5 percent increase in contracted services.
The tax burden for residents will increase by $2.1 million, or 3.2 percent, from the current year.
The budget will also include a one-time expense of more than $570,000 from savings for books, computers and transportation.
“Overall, including the one-time expenses for Fiscal Year 2019, we are looking at a 4.05 percent increase, or just over $2.7 million,” Markwell said.
The budget will now be reviewed by the Town Manager and Town Council before being approved later this spring.
