HYANNIS – The Barnstable Town Council has voted to include substantial funding for roadway improvements in their Fiscal Year 2019 Capital Improvement Budget.

The just over $3.4 million in funding will go toward repair work on roads town-wide focusing on chip and crack sealing.

The town’s Department of Public Works reports that Barnstable is facing a substantial backlog on such projects. Particularly after several years of heavy rains, significant snowfall and coastal flooding affecting roadway and storm-water infrastructure.

“The condition of the town’s root system of more than 700 roads totaling 260 miles is deteriorating each year.” said Barnstable Public works Director Dan Santos,

“Adequate maintenance and reconstruction where necessary is essential to preserve this major capital assets.”

The Town Council will vote on the entire $33.9 million Capital Improvement Budget at their regular meeting this Thursday.
