Barnstable Town Council Approves Affordable Housing Development

BARNSTABLE – The Barnstable Town Council last week gave the go-ahead for a planned new affordable housing development on a parcel of land in Hyannis.

The Housing Assistance Corporation will build an 8-unit, mixed income community on 6,500 square feet of land on Ridgewood Avenue, near the Hyannis Transportation Center The development will be called the Lofts at 57.

Two one-bedroom units will be offered at an affordable rate, while the remaining six would go at market rates.

The lot has been vacant for more than a decade.

The project generated a number of reactions from the community at public hearings. Many were in favor of the plan, but some expressed concern about noise and additional vehicle traffic while others raised concerns about another tax-exempt development in Hyannis.

The Town Council voted unanimously to approve the project.
