HYANNIS – Barnstable Town Council has approved waiving the fees for construction work on the new Hyannis Fire District Fire Station.
“I’m asking you to help the people in Hyannis, the people that pay the taxes year after year, to help us to build the new fire house,” said Board of Fire Commissioners Chair Peter Cross to town councilors.
Voters approved the construction of a new firehouse in April and architects have been preparing plans and documents to go out to bid.
It’s estimated that the decision will save the Fire District around $136,000 in fees.
“It sounds small, $136,000 with an $18.5 million project, it’s not a grand amount of money, but it gives us some flexibility in our budget,” said Cross.
According to documents from the fire district, the Town of Barnstable owns 199 tax exempt properties in the Hyannis Fire District valued at over $336,000.
That does not include the 63 tax exempt properties in Hyannis owned by the Barnstable Housing Authority.
