Barnstable Town Council To Decide on $106K for New Patrol Officers

Barnstable PoliceBARNSTABLE – A request that includes over $106,000 for the hiring of new police officers will be presented to Barnstable Town Council at their meeting tomorrow night.

Due to retirements in the force this year, the department is seeking to use the funds to pay for 10 new patrol officers to be put through police academy.

“That’ll enable those individuals to get through and to get out on the street much earlier than we previously thought,” said Barnstable Town Manager Tom Lynch.

The expenses include pre-employment requirements like medical exams, uniforms and gear and academy tuition and textbooks.

“We’ll be using reserves to fund this and this will be basically new money included in the present fiscal year budget,” said Lynch.

The hiring of the 10 patrol officers would bring the Barnstable Police Department up to full capacity with 117 police officers.
