Barnstable Town Council Votes to Dissolve Economic Development Commission

HYANNIS – Barnstable Town Councilors voted unanimously last week to dissolve the town’s Economic Development Commission.

The commission was formed in 1974 and advised the community on increasing job opportunities with sustainable wages and assist business development to Barnstable.

The commission will be replaced with a “Smart Hyannis” task force which will work to establish a better understanding of doing business in the town

“I think after 35 years it might be a time for a fresh look at things,” said Councilor Jen Cullum.

The town councilors thanked the volunteers who have served on the commission and for their contribution to the community.

“I’d like to keep as many committees going with as much public input as we possibly can and this is not to discourage that, but at the same time I also like it when we can all agree on a good thing and work together to make it better,” said Councilor Paul Hebert.

Councilor John Flores said he hopes current volunteers of the commission will continue to serve on the new economic development entity.

“You have a wealth of experience and you know the history and you know the culture of the community as well as anybody,” Flores said.

“I applaud your past efforts and look forward to working with you in future efforts.”
