Barnstable Town Manager Calls JFK Museum ‘Economic Engine’ for Hyannis

KA_Hyannis_JFK museum3_11315BARNSTABLE – With over 68,000 visitors per year and an ever-increasing array of guest speakers, the JFK Hyannis Museum on Main Street, Hyannis is credited as a key economic driver for downtown Hyannis.

Barnstable Town Manager Tom Lynch called the institution an “economic engine,” and said that, after having a conversation with museum directors, he thinks their plans for 2016 and beyond will continue to attract visitors to the area and introduce families to the Kennedy family’s historical involvement with Hyannisport.

Some of those plans include a new special exhibit, to be called “Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, Mother of a President,” and a continual expansion of the museum’s guest speaker series.

“We see it driving a lot of the tour buses that come [to Hyannis],” Lynch said. “They’re really doing a good job of both preserving the memory of the president and the days he spent here and introducing that presidential time to new individuals and families.”

Lynch also cited the success of last year’s special exhibit, “Jack and Bobby: Brothers First” in drawing in crowds.

The museum is housed inside the former town hall, and when the lease was nearing the end, the museum was the sole responder to a request for proposals issued by the town.

The new lease, recently finalized, will allow the museum to operate out of the same building for at least 20 more years.
