BARNSTABLE – Several months after taking over the position of Barnstable Town Manager, Mark Ells is looking to fill the position of assistant town manager.

Ells took over the position from Tom Lynch in July and has received over 150 applications for the assistant position.

He pointed out what he is looking for in the candidates, as he previously served as assistant town manager.

“They need to be good communicators, decision makers, somebody that’s likeable that can work with the public and work with the council and my senior team and in our community,” said Ells.

Interviews for the position are expected to take place this month, and include in-house, local, regional and national candidates.

Ells has whittled the applicants from 150 to 55 and eventually down to eight.

“We have a very strong management team in Barnstable and I want to make sure who I bring in adds value to that team, so that will be important part of how we evaluate this candidate,” said Ells.

Ells has said that will accept input from town councilors on the candidates and could have someone in the position by the first of the year.
