HYANNIS – Barnstable voters have approved a Proposition 2 ½ override that would pay for their share of a new Cape Cod Regional Technical High School.
The official tally from Town Clerk Ann Quirk Tuesday night was 1749 votes for the override and 890 against it.
“This is a nice hurtle to get over,” said Cape Cod Tech Superintendent Robert Sanborn. “We’re extremely thankful to all the people in Barnstable and the town officials that made this road easier.”
The town’s share of the $128 million cost is just over $50 million that would be paid over 30 years.
All 12 towns in the regional school district, including Barnstable, will vote on the project on October 24.
“We will continue our efforts over the next month leading up to the October 24th vote to inform all voters from Provincetown to Mashpee on the importance of our school building project for all students across the district and we’re very, very excited about the results from Barnstable,” said Sanborn.
It needs to pass by a majority of all the voters in the towns, and not by a majority of towns.
If it passes, the average tax increase for Barnstable residents on a $318,000 single-family home will be about $40 per year for 30 years.
In the preliminary election for the Barnstable Town Council seat from Precinct 12, Paula Schnepp received 112 votes, with incumbent John Norman getting 85 and Marc Bruno receiving 40.
Schnepp and Norman will now face off in the November general election.
