Barnstable Wants to Improve its Recreational Fields

BARNSTABLE – The Town of Barnstable wants to take a look at all of its recreational fields in order to make improvements and ensure that the programming of activities fits the amenities at each field.

The proposed recreational fields study will cost the town over $137,000 to develop a scope of work and to engage a consultant for a comprehensive evaluation of recreation fields that are town-owned and school owned.

Town Manager Tom Lynch said the town is looking to also upgrade various fields around town.

That includes a design study that has been completed for the Lombard Field in West Barnstable which will request capital improvement money and discussion on taking down the Osterville Bay School and having fields behind the location with a playground.

“We’re looking at all those various recreational opportunities to make sure that we’re providing the type of recreation that will meet our programming needs,” said Lynch.

Town officials see the challenges of striking a balance between school needs and municipal needs and want to know where to invest their future capital improvement dollars to improve the fields so that they are up to standards.

Lynch said that keeping the town’s recreation fields up to date is important.

“We have citizens who use our fields all the time and it’s important for us to be able to keep them up in a playable condition,” said Lynch.

Lynch said he also feels that the fields should be in top notch condition when the town hosts outside sporting events.
