HYANNIS – The town of Barnstable’s Adult Supportive Day Program is back on.

The first version of the town’s budget this spring eliminated the program because the fees were not covering the cost, according to Barnstable Senior Center Director Madeline Noonan, who gave a report about the decision to discontinue the program to the Barnstable Town Council this spring.

But town councilors asked that the program be reinstated, saying it fills a need in the community.

The program, which has been run by the town for 12 years, provides activities to elderly people and offers respite for people caring for seniors at home. It is specially designed for seniors who have memory or physical impairments or who are lonely, depressed or socially isolated.

Barnstable Town Manager Thomas Lynch said, “The program was run for a long time at the Barnstable Senior Center. During the budget process, councilors were emphatic that this was a valuable service.”

Lynch said that since restarting, the town has received positive feedback from people in the community. He said, seven people participated in the program in its first week back up and running at the senior center.

Lynch said the program will continue to allow flexibility for clients that cannot attend the program every day. The program is offered Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If needed, transportation is provided by the Senior Center’s Silver Express van.

The program is run out of the Barnstable Senior Center at 825 Falmouth Road in Hyannis. As it has in the past, the program will offer activities focusing on social, physical and cognitive skills.

Fees for the program are based on a sliding scale for Barnstable residents and a flat fee for out-of-town residents.
