DENNIS – Just over a dozen teams pieced together cardboard with only duck tape, some clue and paint to compete in the annual Viking 200 cardboard boat race in the Bass River Saturday morning.
With themes ranging from the World Cup to a spring break party complete with a cardboard palm tree, the racers took their chances and dipped their mostly-paper material boats into the water and navigated around a course that included a floating tire and a large stuffed gorilla.
Teams gathered at the boat launch next to Sundancer’s as a crowd watched from the bluff in front of the restaurant, on a nearby lookout deck and from real boats anchored nearby to watch the fun.
The Viking 200 is sponsored by Cape Cod Viking Real Estate and benefits the Cape Cod Sail and Power Squadron.
The crowd cheered the loudest when a boat designed as a six pack labeled “Duff Beer” as an homage to cartoon character Homer Simpson’s favorite beverage went down in a blaze of glory only 4 feet from the dock.
Some of the awards handed out after the race included Best Design, Most Outrageous, Best Team Spirit, Most Artistic, Best Boat Name, Largest Crew and the Andrea Doria Award for the Most Spectacular Sinking.
