Bay State Bike Week to Promote Safety, Alternative Transportation

HYANNIS – Bay State Bike Week is underway and several events will be held across Cape Cod.

The annual celebration of bicycling throughout the state promotes the alternative to driving motor vehicles.

The Cape Cod Commission and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority are partnering to hold several events throughout the week.

Steven Tupper, the Commission’s transportation program manager, said the programs highlight the importance of bicycle transportation on Cape Cod.

“Certainly it’s an important recreational opportunity down here but it is also important for day to day trips,” Tupper said.

Tupper said bicycling infrastructure continues to be developed across the Cape.

“It’s becoming more of a reality to do some of your day to day activities on a bicycle,” he said. “If you can swap out that car and get some of the congestion off the roads and maybe have a more enjoyable trip that certainly is helpful.”

CCTRA buses also help residents and visitors get around the region by bicycle as buses have bike racks to assist passengers.

“Maybe it is a little bit of a step too far to take the bike the whole way on your trip but you can try to combine the bus and the bike to make a car free journey for yourself,” Tupper said.

As a recreational activity, Tupper said biking is one of the best ways to enjoy the natural aspects of Cape Cod.

“Certainly it’s a big draw for our economy,” he said.

Bike Safety promotions will be held throughout the week in Orleans, Dennis, Bourne and Hyannis. A Bike to Work Day Breakfast with giveaways will also be held Friday at the Hyannis Transportation Center at 8 a.m.
