HYANNIS  – One of the three projects bidding to develop offshore wind off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard has received a federal designation allowing for a streamlined review process.

Bay State Wind, which is a partnership between Eversource and Ørsted, is one of only 38 infrastructure developments to be designated as covered under Title 41 of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST-41) – and the only offshore wind project.

“What FAST-41 gives us is this high priority standing that effectively holds the federal government accountable for ensuring that the permitting process is as thorough and thoughtful, but also efficient as possible,” said Mike Ausere, vice president of business development for Eversource.

Bay State Wind is seeking to construct a 400 to 800 megawatt offshore wind project 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard.

The participation in the FAST-41 permitting process will also provide greater confidence that the permitting schedule specified in Bay State Wind’s bid is reasonable and achievable.

“We are encouraged with this because we think this will ensure that it gets the right level of attention from the permitting agencies at the federal level and more importantly will ensure that clean energy is getting into the Commonwealth as soon as possible,” Ausere said.

Bay State Wind submitted its bid in December 2017 in response to the state’s first Request for Proposals for offshore wind energy generation.
