SANDWICH – The Town Neck Beach Parking lot in Sandwich will remain closed to vehicles for most of the day Friday as construction crews conduct pavement work.

Sandwich Department of Public Works Director Paul Tilton admitted that it wasn’t the “ideal time to close a parking lot during the summer,” but said two other access points were still available to the beach.

The forecast from the National Weather Service called for temperatures in the mid to upper 80s.

Tilton said the work was originally scheduled for the spring, but one of the contractors was not available.

“We had to find a second contractor that had a short window to complete the work, so we took advantage of that and we’re trying to get that done so people can enjoy it throughout the rest of the year,” said Tilton.

One side of the beach will be open at all times while the paving work is being done. Crews will be grinding up the pavement and then regrading and resurfacing.

“I can sympathize with the people because I use the boardwalk as well and it’s tough to lose that one parking lot during the summer. But we hope the overall improvement is going to outweigh the inconvenience for the beachgoers,” Tilton said.

The town said the parking lot should be open by late Friday afternoon.
