Beach Road in Orleans to get Safety Improvements

ORLEANS – Beach Road in Orleans is expected to get more signage in an attempt to improve safety on the roadway.

Selectmen met with Police Chief Scott MacDonald last month to hear ideas that were discussed by concerned residents.

Those ideas included moving the fog line, reducing the travel lane, trimming the bushes and new signage.

“I think that it’s worth a try,” said MacDonald. “If the signs don’t work, or if we feel it’s just too much for the particular area, clearly we can remove it.”

Highway managers have said that a narrower road would calm traffic but some are concerned that it could be too dangerous.

New signs for the roadway are expected to be installed soon and will reinforce the rules of the road, including what sides bicyclists and walkers need to be on and that it is a high enforcement area.

“Some sort of warning to the motorists that the police department is out there and we will be enforcing the motor vehicle laws, may be some benefit to this situation,” said MacDonald.
