BOURNE – Several Belgium students are at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy this week, a week after a terrorist attack at an airport in Brussels, Belgium.
The 14 and 15 year old students were welcomed with remarks by Mass Maritime President Fran McDonald, and the Belgian flag flown at half-staff along with the American flag.
With the airport in Brussels still closed after last week’s attacks, the students had to endure an eight hour bus ride to Frankfurt, Germany to fly to Boston.
“We wanted to take the plane Friday and it happened on Tuesday and we didn’t know if it was already done at the airport, could we go, we didn’t know,” said student Mi Blancke.
Student Meal Croubels was sad about what had happened in his country but was happy to be in America.
“It was terrible actually, it wasn’t fine,” said student Meal Croubels. “I’d rather be here than home, I love it over here.”
The academy welcomes students from across the ocean interested in pursuing a career in the maritime industry, every two years.
Mass Maritime President Fran McDonald was proud of the Belgium students, that they continued their trip to America, despite the last week’s attacks.
“I commended them for their bravery to still come out and experience the world,” said McDonald.
