WAREHAM – A Berkley man has pleaded not guilty to a charge that he shot and killed a man in his Wareham home.
Seventy-one-year-old John Wittey was taken into custody yesterday and was arraigned in Wareham District Court on one count of murder.
He pled not guilty and was ordered held without bail.
Around 11:48 a.m. on Tuesday, Wareham Police say that they received a call from someone at 120 Glenn Charlie Road reporting that they had went to check on a friend and discovered him unresponsive.
Upon arrival, police found the victim, 70 year old John Williams, inside the home and bleeding from multiple wounds.
Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation by State Police and the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office found that Wittey, who was acquainted with Williams, stabbed the victim once and shot him 10 times.
Plymouth Assistant District Attorney Joseph Janezic says Wittey apparently became enraged upon learning his long-term girlfriend, who died last month, had been romantically involved with Williams at some point.
As a result of their investigation, State Police were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Wittey and arrested him yesterday morning at a relative’s home in Pembroke.
Wittey is due back in court next month.
Neighbors described Williams as an amateur pilot, ham radio operator and motorcycle enthusiast who worked at a local Salvation Army Thrift Store.
