Best Revenge 5 Fire Likely Caused by Lightning Strike NTSB Investigation Shows

FALMOUTH – The National Transportation Safety Board has determined that a lightning strike likely played a role in the fire last July that destroyed the 58 foot catamaran Best Revenge 5.

At the time, the boat was docked at a marina pier in Falmouth Inner Harbor. At about 1:30 am on July 11, 2017, the captain awoke to the smell of smoke, he went to investigate and found the vessel on fire, he then awoke the first mate and told her to evacuate and contact the fire department and neighboring vessels.

The first mate suffered second and third degree burns in the incident and was eventually med-flighted to Boston for treatment of her injuries.

The investigation found that the fire began in one of the staterooms on the boat and was caused by an electrical fault possibly caused by the lightning strike.

The Best Revenge Five was a total loss, in addition, damage to the dock and a nearby vessel totaled a combined $1,508,000.
