Reconstruction Planned For Chatham Fish Pier Observation Deck

CHATHAM – The reconstruction of the popular Chatham Fish Pier Observation Deck has gone out to bid.

The new deck is estimated to cost around $1.2 million but the exact cost will be narrowed once bids come in.

“It’s still function-able but it has had issues, we’ve had to limit the number of people on it on a given day and it just needs to be replaced, it’s due,” said Chatham Coastal Resource Manager Ted Keon.

The deadline for bids is November 28th, with the town hoping that the project is finished in time for the summer season on June 15th.

If the contract is awarded next month, work could start in January and would likely be finished by the town’s expected deadline.

“We definitely don’t want to be into the major aspects of this project when the fishing boats are all lined up ready to get offloaded,” said Keon.

So far, three general contractors and a number of subcontractors have taken out bid packages but only one came to a non-mandatory pre-bid conference and onsite inspection, which was held earlier this month.

The popular tourist attraction draws up to 200,000 people during the summer to watch fishing boats being offloaded and is an accessible spot to see seals.

Funding for the project comes from an $11.3 million waterways infrastructure bond.
