Big Birthday Celebration Being Held Saturday for Bourne Boy

BOURNE – The Bourne community is coming together on Saturday to celebrate the birthday of an eight-year-old boy with autism.

A birthday party was held for Kai Pontes last weekend but according to his parents, none of his friends showed up.

In response, family friends Kristen Goodrich, Caitlin Smith and Ashley Pina created a Facebook event for Saturday, inviting the public to celebrate Kai’s birthday and that’s when it took off on social media.

Many people were offering to buy Kai presents and cards and bring their own children to the party.

Based on the feedback they received on the page, the friends determined that a neighborhood party would be too small, and instead came up with a number of ideas to help make the event better while inviting the public to celebrate as well.

They secured the Train Bridge Pavilion at Buzzards Bay Park as the location for the event and settled on a time of 3-6pm.

The cost of renting the location was waived for the family.

The friends also invited local businesses to donate to the event and couldn’t believe the outpouring of support from the community.

“We were just absolutely blown away at the generosity of this town,” said Smith. “It was really amazing.”

Buzzards Bay House of Pizza, Prime Time Pizza, Mezza Luna and Monument Beach Pizza are all donating pizza. Cupcakes are being donated by baker Nicole Mitchell.

Bourne Florists is donating balloons for the event, Home Depot in Plymouth is donating cases of water and local DJ Dave Wolfson is donating is time to provide entertainment for the party.

The town’s fire and police departments will also be there and there will be touch-a-trucks for the attendees to enjoy.

Smith added that Kai’s mom Merrill can’t believe how giving the community has been.

“She’s just blown away,” said Smith. “She’s just so touched by how many people care. We’ve been picking up cards from different businesses and different individuals that have put together envelopes upon envelopes of cards.”

The celebration is open to the public and Smith said that Kai loves Mario and Nintendo, LEGO blocks, puzzles, Thomas the Train, Pokemon and Minecraft.
