Big Brothers Big Sisters Seeking Male Mentors

CAPE COD – A campaign has been launched by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands  to attract more male mentors.

Regional Director J.R. Mell recently explained the challenge.  “One of our efforts is to match more boys who are waiting on the Cape and Islands. We came up with a campaign to try and get 30 guys in 30 days to sign up to become Big Brothers.”

There are currently 90 children on the wait list, of which 63% are boys.  4 female volunteers’ sign up for every male, while for every girl who is referred there are 4 boys.

The commitment is only 2 days a month for a few hours each.

Mell has observed how rewarding the mentoring can be.  “All of our bigs tell us they almost feel a little bit selfish.  They feel like they are getting more out of the program than the littles.  It’s absolutely a very rewarding experience.”

Several organizations are offering their assistance, including The Cape Cod Foundation, The Cape and Islands United Way and The Community Leadership Institute of Cape Cod.

323 children throughout the Cape & Islands are currently receiving mentorship through Big Brothers Big Sisters.  To volunteer, help with the campaign or get more information, visit www.capebigs.org.
