Big Fix Looking for Volunteers in Barnstable

HYANNIS – The Housing Assistance Corporation is looking for volunteers for its 10th annual Big Fix-A-Thon.

The goal of the HAC and the Big Fix is to help assist veterans, seniors and disabled homeowners within one town on Cape Cod.

The event began in 2010 and has since helped 124 homeowners with a variety of home repair projects like yard work, interior and exterior painting, repair or replacement of walkways, light plumbing, and basic electrical work.

“There are a couple levels of involvement that people can do. They can volunteer as fixers, volunteer as fundraisers, or people who volunteer the day of as and also fundraise,” said Chief Development Officer Anne Van Vleck.

“We really appreciate the fundraising component because that allows us to do our programs and services throughout the whole year beyond just the one day of service,” continued Van Vleck.

There are some rewards for volunteering, including a commemorative hammer lapel pin for those who raise $250 or more, and prizes like a $500 gift certificate to Embargo and 2 round-trip Cape Air tickets from Boston to a New England destination for those who raise the most funds.

“In my role, I’ve had the opportunity to go around on the day of the big fix and talk to different home owners and different volunteers and it’s really hard to put into words how powerful it is. Not only for the homeowners but the volunteers. It’s such a feel-good day of community helping community,” said Van Vleck.

The deadline to volunteer by is September 2, and the Big Fix will take place on Saturday, October 5 in Hyannis and Centerville.

A kick-off ceremony will take place the morning of at Barnstable High School before volunteers disperse to their assigned homes.

Lunch will be donated by the 99 Restaurant.
