Big Nick’s Ride for the Fallen Takes to the Streets

CW_Big Nick's Ride_33016YARMOUTH – The seventh annual Big Nick’s Ride for the Fallen takes to the streets of the Cape on Sunday.

Opening ceremonies for the ride begin at 9 a.m. at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Complex on Sunday with kick-stands up at 9:30 a.m.

The ride is expected to end at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School at 12 p.m. where a family-friendly celebration will be held.

The event attracts thousands of riders on motorcycles and thousands who will line-up along the route to watch.

The ride is named after Yarmouth resident and Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School graduate Nicholas G. Xiarhos, who died overseas in combat in July 2009.

His father, Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos said the ride brings together the community.

“With what’s happening in America, this is a great time to not only thank our military, but the men and women of law enforcement,” said Xiarhos.

The police-escorted ride will go through the mid-Cape area with all proceeds benefitting the Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Fund and the Massachusetts Iraq and Afghanistan Fallen Heroes Memorial Fund.

Riders will leave the Bourne National Cemetery and proceed along Route 6A though Bourne, Sandwich and Barnstable. They are expected to enter Yarmouth between 10:45 and 11 a.m.

The ride will continue along Route 6A and then turn onto Setucket Road and then onto North Dennis Rd. Riders will then merge onto North Main Street before turning right onto Regional Avenue and then onto Station Avenue. The ride will end at the Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School where there will be food, vendors and entertainment until 2 p.m.

Motorists should expect delays throughout the morning.

Former Marine Michael McGee first took part in the ride last year and is now on the planning committee for this year’s ride.

“It really helps me raise awareness and I’m very glad to be a part of it, and stay a part of it, it gives me a sense of belonging as well as giving back,” said McGee.
