Bill Sponsored By Cape Congressman Would Place Additional Sanctions on North Korea

WASHINGTON – Cape Cod’s congressman was a lead sponsor of a bill that passed the House of Representatives yesterday that will place additional sanctions on North Korea.

The move comes in response to the hydrogen bomb test by the Kim regime last week. The sanctions would cut off financial avenues supporting Pyongyang and their weapons program, according to Massachusetts 9th District Congressman Bill Keating (D-Bourne)

“North Korea continues to aggressively pursue their weapons program in the face of established standards and despite strong from opposition from the international community,” Keating said. “The January 5th reported test will not the the last.”

Keating is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and a ranking member of the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade Subcommittee.

The Bourne Democrat says the bill, HR 757, would tighten current sanctions on the North while also adding new sanctions.

South Korean defense officials have confirmed that it was a North Korean drone that crossed the border today, prompting the South to fire 20 machine gun warning shots.

The drone then went back into North Korea without any shots hitting the drone.

It is the first time shots have been fired in what has so far been a Cold War-style standoff between the Koreas in the wake of the North’s nuclear test one week ago.
