BOSTON (AP) — Cats and dogs which have been subjects in research institutions and product testing facilities could have a second shot at life under a bill the Massachusetts Senate has passed.
The bill would require research labs spare animals from automatic euthanasia and instead offer dogs and cats for adoption through animal rescue organizations.
Sen. Bruce Tarr sponsored the bill. The Gloucester Republican said Thursday animals involved in research “make a tremendous sacrifice on behalf of our society,” and deserve every opportunity for adoption when their service is completed.
Animals that pose a risk to the health and safety of the public are exempted.
About 80,000 cats and dogs are used for research and experimentation in the U.S. each year. Nearly 60,000 are beagles.
The bill now heads to the Massachusetts House.
