Birding for Beginners Workshop to be Held in Harwich Port

HARWICH PORT – Bird song and activity has increased as spring has arrived on Cape Cod and it is a great time to pick up birding skills.

The Harwich Conservation Trust is sponsoring a “Birding for Beginners” workshop Sunday, May 27 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the 66-acre Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve in Harwich Port.

Todd Kelley will lead participants along a Bluebird Trail of nestboxes that host bluebirds, tree swallows and other songbird species.

Attendees will learn how to recognize and identify birds by sight and sound, distinguish field marks such as the size and shape of bill, body size, wing shape, flight patterns, general behavior and plumage, and decipher the habitats preferred by particular birds.

Kelley will also show how to interpret bird tracks and signs.

The cost is $15 per person and space is limited.

Attendees are asked to bring binoculars and a birding field guide.
