BARNSTABLE – A group of property owners in the Blish Point neighborhood of Barnstable Village continue to deal with impacts from winter storm flooding.
Several residents in the area between Maraspin Creek and Millway Beach plan to appear before the Town Council tonight to seek assistance and to put in place mediation efforts to avoid future floods.
The coordinator of the Blish Point Citizens for a Flood-Resistant Neighborhood Peter Halesworth said the winter storm season was tough on neighborhoods drainage system.
“It’s been under severe pressure because of these surges from the storms and I think it’s a good time to test it efficacy and its performance,” Halesworth said.
Halesworth said the town needs to find out if the current drainage system is the best solution if the pattern of more intense storms continues and if the burm along the north side of the creek should be raised.
Residents in the area are concerned about the damage to their homes, displacement of families, financial costs and devalution of property.
“Under the current conditions if this continues to repeat we are going to be under serious stress,” Halesworth said. “We need all stakeholders, residents, town officials and businesses to pull together to find a solution.
The value of properties in the area is more than $200 million and more than $2 million per year is paid in annual tax revenue.
“Like any taxpayers we just want to make sure that these dollars are being spent in a way which can help us preserve our neighborhood and prevent devaluation of our properties and homes,” Halesworth said.
The meeting is at 7 p.m. at town hall in Hyannis.
