HYANNIS – Boston Mayor Marty Walsh stressed the importance of Democrats coming together on Saturday at the Cape and Islands Democratic Council’s Kennedy Legacy Dinner.

Walsh was the event’s guest speaker and discussed Democratic Party principals, including reforming immigration, restoring the middle class, caring about all people and staying progressive.

Walsh says the party is too divisive right now.

“We are saying this is a line and if you don’t believe in this and you don’t believe in that we can’t bring you in. That’s not who we are as a partry” Walsh said.

“We need to be a party where the doors are open, you are welcome and we need to pull people in.”

Walsh said that Democrats believe that opportunity is for everyone and that can’t be forgotten.

“Our party stands for welcoming immigrants. Our party stands for healing the scars of racism. Our party stands for closing the wage gap,” he said.

“It all grows from the same idea of an equal chance for all.”

The Boston mayor said the middle class is under attack.

“Too many of our neighbors are struggling to live their American story,” he said.

Walsh said the reason for the weakening of the middle class is the result of GOP policies, including cutting taxes for the wealthy on the backs of the less fortunate.

He said working class people on the Cape are hurting right now because of the policies coming out of Washington and the state.

“They are not hurting the rich. They are not hurting the people who have a beautiful house on the waterfront,” Walsh said. “They are hurting the people who are inland Cape. The people who are at the malls and at America’s food basket buying food.”

The Council also honored Diane Turco, with the Cape Downwinders, as the Community Activist of the Year.

The Democrat of the Year was the Cape Cod High School Dems and the Cape Cod Student Board for inspiring youth activism in the region.
