BOSTON (AP) — The latest vehicle to join the Boston police fleet is an ice cream truck.
The Boston Globe reports the $89,000 truck will be used as a part of “Operation Hoodsie Cup,” which hands out free cups of ice cream to children in Boston neighborhoods. The fleet’s old truck will be retired.
Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh, Police Commissioner William Evans and other officials unveiled the truck Monday at police headquarters in Roxbury.
Walsh and Evans passed out frozen treats donated by dairy company HP Hood to children attending sports camp at the Tobin Community Center.
Walsh says it’s a way for police and young people to interact in a positive way. The program has handed out about 120,000 ice cream cups since its 2010 debut.
The program runs through September.
