Boune Officials Prepare For Community Center Reopening

BOURNE – Bourne Town Administrator Tom Guerino recently met with selectmen to provide an update on the Veterans Memorial Community Center which sustained extensive water damage earlier this year.

Guerino said that the center’s new gym floor has already been installed and that the town’s Council on Aging has already relocated back into the facility.

As Guerino addressed selectmen at their temporary meeting place within Bourne High School, he informed them that the community center will likely reopen by July 1st.

Many parts of the facility, which also serves as the town’s senior center needed to be completely replaced including much of the ceiling and at least two large floor areas.

“About 80% of the building was touched by the break, some substantially more than others. There’s not a whole lot of the building that was not affected by at least some water damage,” said Guerino.

Throughout the closure, meals continued to be provided by the Supportive Day Program, which is located in a separate part of the structure that was not damaged, and the staff of the Bourne Council on Aging and Recreation Department will be able to work in a space sealed off from the construction.

The cost for the repairs is estimated to be well over $400,000, which has been covered by insurance.
