Bourne Elementary Schools Using New Report Cards Based on State Standards

BOURNE – Elementary schools in Bourne are issuing a new report card this year to evaluate student progress in state-educational standards.

The report card will evaluate students in key areas throughout the year on a scale of 1 through 4, with a 1 indicating minimal progress and a 4 indicating that the student is performing beyond expectations.

“This process started a number of years ago. We’ve always had a mechanism for reporting on the students’ progress at the elementary level that was not your standard grading system,” said Superintendent of Bourne Public Schools Steven Lamarche.

“One of the things that we found was that it was primarily skills-based, it wasn’t really conceptually-based. We’ve been working on this for a number of years now to identify our students’ progress within skills and concepts at the same time, sort of a marriage of the two.”

Other learning skills are also evaluated by the new report card, including community interaction, different methods of learning, and personal development.

Lamarche said that the district plans to expand the practice to other grade levels as well.

He says that the opening of the newly built grade span school will provide for the opportunity to make changes to how certain grade levels are evaluated in certain areas.

“After elementary our grading system does transition back to the ‘A, B, C, D, and Failure’ as a mechanism, but we’re looking to evolve that as well,” Lamarche said.

“One of the things that’s going to be able to help us with that is when we open up our new school to grade span schools. Currently, grade 5 is in our middle school, which is in the standard grading process, and we’ll be looking to try to transition that to a standards-based reporting system for grade 5 in the new grade span school.”
