BOURNE – The town of Bourne will look to craft regulations this winter on the use of the Barlows Landing boat ramp.

Barlows Landing is a popular launch and recovery area for larger sail boats and power boats due to its depth.

Residents have expressed concern about the increased use of commercial haulers tying up the area.

“This has become an issue because of the amount of traffic it generates and because of the size of the boats that are being launched and recovered at this facility,” said Steven Mealy, a Bourne Selectman. “It’s become more of a commercial area as opposed to a recreational area and the local residents have seen this growth over a period of years and are now asking us to address that.”

Mealy says the goal will be to segregate the larger commercial haulers from smaller recreational boats without completely shutting out the larger vessels and trailers.

“It’s going to require some work,” Mealy said.

Mealy said there will have to be times when recreational boaters and residents can use the landing without being encumbered by large vehicles and cranes. But on the flip side, commercial haulers would need times when they can use the landing in a timely manner.

Mealy says the town could pass regulations pertaining to the use of the facility without town meeting approval.
