MASHPEE- Two special town meetings are being held tonight on Cape Cod.
In Mashpee, voters will consider a 29 article warrant, and will weigh a number of articles related to the town’s nitrogen management and wastewater plan.
One article would invest $250,000 dollars in quahog seeds as part of the plan to use shellfish to reduce nitrogen in Mashpee’s bays. Residents will also consider an $80,000 plan to clean Popponesset and Waquoit bays. The town is hoping to partner with neighboring Barnstable, Sandwich, and Falmouth on that project.
Voters will also be asked to fund $350,000 in improvements and renovations to a number of town buildings.
Special Town Meeting begins in Mashpee at Mashpee High School at 7 pm.
Bourne voters are faced with a series of budget cuts after residents said no to a $2.7 million proposition two and a half override at town election two weeks ago.
Among the proposed cuts are $480,000 for the school system. The cut would result in the reduction of four full-time positions and the slashing of funding for a number of programs. $356,000 in recreation funding is on the the chopping block, resulting in the elimination of the summer lifeguard and summer swim lessons programs at all Bourne beaches. Town officials say the library is also in danger of losing its certification, and state funding as a result, due to proposed staff and hours reductions.
Other proposed cuts include staff reductions at the Council on Aging; staff and hours reductions at the community center; staff eliminated from departments at town hall, including the department of public works; and the elimination of all human services funding. The Bourne Fire Department is facing $115,000 in cuts.
The meeting will be held at Bourne High School at 7 pm.
