BOURNE – The Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will host its annual Memorial Day service on Sunday.
The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. and will feature the parade of colors, the singing of the National Anthem and remarks from several speakers, including keynote speaker Francisco Urena, who was recently appointed as Massachusetts Secretary of Veteran Affairs.
In addition, there will also be a special dedication.
“We have a new memorial walkway that was constructed this past December,” said Cemetery Director John Spruyt. “We will dedicate that and the walkway holds over 55 monuments for the public to view.”
While the service is sure to be emotional, Spruyt says he also encourages the 500 expected to attend to walk the grounds to get a real sense of what Memorial Day is all about.
“It’ll leave them not just with a somber feeling, but a very proud feeling knowing that we’re able to assemble because of the veterans that lie in front of us,” Spruyt said.
The service is being held Sunday so it won’t conflict with ceremonies taking place locally on Monday.
